Etymology
Mai comes from Latin magis, the comparative adverb meaning 'more'. Romanian kept this word as its main tool for building comparatives, since it did not develop synthetic comparative endings like Latin did. Over time mai also took on a second job: marking continuation or negation, as in nu mai (no longer).
