Sine comes from the Latin dative form sibi, part of the Latin reflexive pronoun se/sui. In Romanian it widened into a general oblique reflexive pronoun, used mainly after prepositions, and it covers all persons, genders, and numbers without changing form. Its deeper root goes back to the Proto-Indo-European reflexive stem that also gives rise to reflexive pronouns in other Indo-European languages.
