Etymology
Acesta comes from Vulgar Latin, where the plain demonstrative iste ("this, that of yours") was reinforced with the deictic particle ecce ("behold, here") to give more emphatic force. This eccu(m) + iste construction became common across Romance languages as speakers felt the bare Latin demonstratives had grown too weak. Romanian kept the short form acest for use directly before a noun and built acesta, with an added enclitic ending, as the stronger standalone or postposed form.
