Etymology

The preposition la descends from the Latin adverb illac, meaning "that way" or "over there," rather than from Latin ad, the source of the corresponding preposition in most other Romance languages. This gives Romanian a word for "at" or "to" with a different Latin ancestor than Italian a, French à, or Spanish a, even though the modern meanings largely overlap. It already appears with its core locative and directional sense in the earliest surviving Romanian texts.
