Vrea descends from Vulgar Latin volere, a remodeled form of the classical Latin verb velle, meaning to want or to wish. Romanian kept this verb as one of its most basic, high-frequency words, alongside a more formal doublet, a voi, from the same root. The Latin root itself continues a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to wish or to will, which also gave rise to the English modal verb will and the German verb wollen.
