Să comes from the Latin conjunction si, meaning "if." In Romanian, this word shifted from a conditional meaning to a grammatical marker that introduces subjunctive clauses, a change shared by several Balkan languages that lost or reduced their infinitive. Today să has almost no meaning of its own. It signals that the verb after it is in the subjunctive, much like "to" before an English verb.
