Etymology
Romanian 'a fi' is a suppletive verb built from several different Latin sources. The present tense (sunt, ești, este) comes from Latin 'sum, esse', while the infinitive 'fi', the past participle 'fost', and the gerund 'fiind' come from Latin 'fieri', the passive infinitive of 'facere' meaning 'to become' or 'to happen'. Over time these separate Latin paradigms merged into one irregular Romanian verb meaning 'to be'.
