Etymology
Ființă was formed inside Romanian from the verb a fi ('to be') and the abstract-noun suffix -ință, the same suffix found in credință ('faith', from a crede) and cuviință ('propriety'). The verb a fi continues Latin fieri ('to become, to be made'), the passive counterpart of facere ('to do, to make'). Facere and fieri go back to the Proto-Indo-European root *dʰeh₁-, 'to put, to place, to do', which also lies behind English do.
