Etymology
Romanian "publica" entered the language during the 19th-century modernization drive, when scholars reshaped Romanian vocabulary by borrowing heavily from French and Latin. It traces back to Latin "publicare", meaning to make public or make available to the people, itself built on "publicus" (public, of the people). The word replaced or supplemented older Slavic-influenced terms as Romanian aligned itself with its Romance neighbors.
