Etymology
Romanian mască entered the language through French masque in the nineteenth century, during the period when Romanian vocabulary was reshaped by French and Italian borrowings. French masque itself descends from Italian maschera, which traces back to Medieval Latin masca, meaning specter or witch. Some scholars link that Medieval Latin word further to Arabic maskharah, meaning mockery or buffoon, though this chain is debated. The form masca shown here is simply mască plus the definite article -a, giving the mask.
