Etymology

Preocupa entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of the wave of French and Latin borrowings that reshaped the language's vocabulary. It comes from French préoccuper, itself from Latin praeoccupare, built from prae- (before) and occupare (to seize, to occupy). The original Latin sense was literal, to seize a place first, and it later shifted to the figurative sense of a thought or worry taking hold of someone's mind.
