Etymology
Ocupat comes from Latin occupatus, the past participle of occupare, meaning to seize or take over. Romanian took the word in as a learned borrowing, likely reinforced by French occupé, during the wave of Latin and French vocabulary that reshaped modern Romanian in the 19th century. It did not survive as a native inherited word from spoken Latin, unlike much of the core vocabulary.
