Etymology
Romanian "consuma" is a modern borrowing from French "consommer", itself from Latin "consumere". Latin built this from the prefix "con-" (together, thoroughly) and "sumere" (to take). Romanian already had inherited Latin vocabulary, but this verb entered later, during the 19th century wave of French-based modernization. The core sense stayed close to the Latin: to take something up until it is gone.
