Etymology

Romanian borrowed peșteră from a South Slavic source, close to Bulgarian пещера (peshtera), meaning cave. That Slavic word itself traces back to pešt, an old term for oven or furnace, so a cave was originally pictured as a natural oven, a hollow, heated-looking space in the rock. The word entered Romanian during centuries of close contact with Slavic-speaking neighbors in the Balkans.
