Etymology
Publicitate entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French borrowings that modernized the language's vocabulary. It comes from French publicité, which itself derives from Latin publicus, meaning public, combined with the abstract noun suffix -itas. The word originally meant the state of being public before narrowing to its modern commercial sense of advertising.
