Etymology
Craniu entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as a learned borrowing, most likely through French crâne, itself from Latin cranium. Latin took the word from Greek kranion, meaning skull. The borrowing belongs to a wave of Latin and French medical and scientific terms that reshaped Romanian vocabulary during that period, replacing or supplementing older, more colloquial words for head.
