Etymology
Romanian borrowed mason from French maçon in the nineteenth century, during the wave of French-influenced modernization of Romanian vocabulary. In French the word simply meant a builder in stone, but Romanian narrowed it to a single specialized sense: a member of a Masonic lodge. The ordinary building trade kept its native Romanian name, zidar, so mason and zidar split the two meanings that French maçon carries in one word.
