Etymology
Închipui is built from the prefix în- and the noun chip, meaning face, shape, or image, with the verb-forming suffix -ui. The literal sense is to put a shape or image into something, in this case into the mind, which gave rise to the meaning to imagine or to picture. Chip is not a Latin word; Romanian dictionaries trace it to a Slavic source, so no secure Proto-Indo-European root can be given for the whole verb.
