Etymology

Sfert came into Romanian from Hungarian fertály, a word Hungarian itself had borrowed from German Viertel, meaning quarter. Romanian added an initial s- sound, a common adaptation pattern when the language absorbed Hungarian loanwords in regions of long contact, such as Transylvania. The word settled into everyday use for fractions of an hour, a unit, or a whole.
