Etymology
Rupt descends from the Latin past participle ruptus, from the verb rumpere, meaning to break or burst. Romanian kept it as the past participle of a rupe (to break, to tear), and it now doubles as a plain adjective. The same Latin root spread across the Romance languages and into English through borrowed forms.
