Etymology
Romanian took "academie" from French "académie" in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French borrowings that reshaped modern Romanian vocabulary. French in turn drew it from Latin "academia", which came from Greek "Akadēmeia". That Greek word named the olive grove outside Athens where Plato taught, itself named after a legendary hero called Akademos. The word is a proper name at its root, not a word built from common Indo-European building blocks.
