Etymology
Romanian borrowed "intim" from French "intime" in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French vocabulary that reshaped modern Romanian. The French word traces to Latin "intimus", the superlative of the preposition "intus" or "in", meaning "innermost" or "deepest within". So the word literally once meant "most inward" before it settled into its modern sense of closeness and privacy.
