Etymology
The verb a funcționa entered Romanian in the nineteenth century, borrowed from French fonctionner as part of a wave of Latin-based vocabulary that modernized the language. French fonctionner itself traces to Latin functio, "performance, execution," from the verb fungi, "to perform or discharge a duty." Funcționează is the third person present form, built by adding the neologism-verb ending -ează to the stem funcțion-.
