Etymology
Fire began as the old long infinitive of the verb a fi, to be, built the same way citire comes from a citi. Because a fi itself descends from Latin fieri, the passive infinitive of facere behind English words like future, fire was originally a way of saying being. The infinitive use faded over time and only the noun sense survived: a person's inner being, their nature.
