Etymology
Romanian borrowed "demon" from French démon and learned Latin daemon, both going back to Greek daímōn, a spirit or minor deity that could be good or evil. Ancient Greek writers linked the word to daiesthai, "to divide, allot", picturing a daimon as a force that apportions fate to a person. Christian usage later narrowed the meaning to an evil spirit, the sense Romanian inherited. The word entered Romanian through French and church Latin rather than through Slavic channels, unlike many everyday Romanian words for spirits.
