Etymology

Acest comes from Vulgar Latin eccum istum, a combination of the presentative particle eccum (behold, here is) and the demonstrative iste (this, that near you). The same Latin source gives Italian questo and Spanish este. Romanian kept the reinforcing prefix as a-, fused onto the old demonstrative stem.
