Etymology

Ești is the second-person singular present tense of a fi, the Romanian verb for 'to be'. It comes from Vulgar Latin es, meaning 'you are', with a final -i added by analogy with other second-person singular endings in Romanian. Latin es itself continues one of the oldest verb roots in the Indo-European family, the root for existence.
