Etymology

The standard Romanian word is "așa", built from Latin elements meaning "like this" (compare the demonstrative particle "sic" behind Italian "così", Spanish "así", and French "ainsi"). "Așă", with a final "ă" instead of "a", is an older and regional pronunciation, common in Moldavian speech, Aromanian, and in old chronicle texts, before spelling settled on "așa". It shows the same tendency of unstressed final "-a" shifting toward "-ă" seen in other old and dialectal Romanian words.
