Așa comes from Vulgar Latin eccum sic, a fusion of the demonstrative particle ecce ('behold, here') with sic ('thus, so'). The same Latin combination gave rise to Italian così. Over time the phrase fused into a single Romanian adverb, keeping the core sense of 'in this way, thus'.
