Etymology
Romanian borrowed "milion" from French "million" and Italian "milione" in the modern era, part of the wave of Western Romance vocabulary that reshaped Romanian after 1800. The Italian word itself was built from "mille" (thousand) plus the augmentative suffix "-one", so it literally meant something like "big thousand". Latin "mille" traces back to a Proto-Indo-European compound meaning "one thousand".
