Etymology
Miliard entered Romanian from French milliard. French formed the word from million by replacing the ending with the augmentative suffix -iard, the same suffix seen in words like poignard or richard. Million itself goes back to Italian milione, an augmentative of Latin mille, thousand. So miliard is, at root, a bigger version of a bigger version of thousand.
