Etymology

Romanian borrowed "hol" in the late 19th or early 20th century from German "Halle" and French "hall" as apartment buildings and the vocabulary of modern housing spread through the region. The French word was itself a borrowing from English "hall". All three trace back to a Germanic word for a large covered room.
