Etymology
"Mers" is the nominalized past participle of the verb "a merge" (to go, to walk). Romanian "a merge" descends from Latin "mergere," which meant to dip or plunge, and shifted in Romanian to mean simply to go or move. This semantic shift is unique to Romanian among the Romance languages, where other descendants of "mergere" kept meanings closer to submersion.
