"Trecut" is the past participle of the verb "a trece", meaning to pass or cross over. Romanian formed it in the regular way, by adding the participle ending "-ut" to the verb stem. "A trece" itself descends from Latin, carrying the core sense of crossing from one point to another, which is why "trecut" now means both "passed" and, as a noun, "the past".
