Frică is inherited from Latin, most likely from fricāre, 'to rub,' which in the Balkan Latin of Romanian's ancestors shifted from a physical sensation to the shivering unease of fear. The same word survives in Aromanian as fricâ, which suggests the shift happened before the eastern Romance dialects split apart. Romanian etymologists still debate the exact semantic path.
