Etymology

Domn descends from the Latin dominus, meaning lord, master, or owner. Dominus itself was built from domus, house, plus a suffix, so the original sense was master of the household. Romanian kept the word as part of its core Latin inheritance, and over time it broadened from household master to polite title for any man, while also serving historically as the title for the ruling prince of Wallachia or Moldavia.
