Acela descends from a reinforced Latin demonstrative built on ille, "that," the same source that gives Romanian its whole family of distal pronouns. Popular Latin speakers strengthened plain ille with the deictic particle eccum, "look, here," producing a form close to eccu(m) ille. Romanian later added an emphatic final -a, yielding acela. The same eccum-plus-ille pattern produced parallel demonstratives across the Romance languages.
