Etymology
Romanian acel continues the Vulgar Latin compound eccu(m) ille, which fused the presentative particle ecce or eccum, meaning roughly 'behold, here is,' with the Latin demonstrative ille, 'that.' The same reinforcing pattern produced Italian quello and Spanish aquel. Over centuries the compound wore down into the single word acel, keeping the sense of 'that, over there,' as the counterpart to acest, 'this, near me,' which was built the same way from ecce plus Latin iste.
