Etymology

Femeie comes from Latin familia, meaning household or the people under one roof. This is unusual: most Romance languages built their word for woman on Latin femina (French femme, Spanish/Italian femmina), but Romanian instead let familia drift in meaning from household to the woman who ran it, and finally to woman in general. The word familie was later borrowed again into Romanian from French, so the two words now sit side by side despite sharing one ancestor.
