Etymology
Romanian borrowed "hai" from Ottoman Turkish "haydi" (also "hadi"), an exhortative interjection meaning roughly "come on, get moving." The word spread through the Balkans during centuries of Ottoman rule and settled into everyday speech in several languages, not just Romanian. Because it is a borrowing rather than native inherited vocabulary, it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
