Romanian borrowed "familie" from French "famille" during the 19th-century push to re-Latinize the language and align its vocabulary with Western Romance languages. French "famille" itself descends from Latin "familia", which originally meant a household, including servants, not just blood relatives. The word largely displaced older Slavic-rooted terms for kin groups in formal and everyday Romanian.
