Etymology

Romanian "a decide" is a 19th-century borrowing from French "décider", reinforced by the Latin source "decidere". It entered the language during the period when Romanian scholars replaced or supplemented older Slavic-rooted vocabulary with French and Latin terms for law, government, and administration. The Latin verb itself combines "de-" (off, away) with "caedere" (to cut, strike), so the original image is of settling a matter by cutting it off.
