Etymology

Fară is an Aromanian word, not part of standard Daco-Romanian vocabulary. It comes from contact between Aromanian shepherd communities and Albanian speakers in the Balkans, borrowing the Albanian word farë, which means 'seed' and, figuratively, 'stock' or 'lineage'. Among Aromanians the word came to mean a clan or kin group, and by extension the whole people, as in the name Fara Armãneascã, 'the Aromanian nation'.
