Unu comes from Latin unus, una, unum, meaning "one," which Romanian inherited directly like the other Romance languages. Latin unus goes back to a Proto-Indo-European root for "one" that also gave English one. Romanian kept unu as the free-standing counting form and developed the shorter un and o as the articles used right before a noun.
