Etymology

Celălalt formed by fusing the demonstrative article cel ("that one") with alalt, an old variant of alt ("other"), itself from Latin alter. This univerbation, common in Romanian demonstratives, produced a single word meaning "the other one" where other Romance languages keep the article and the adjective separate. The feminine and plural forms (cealaltă, ceilalți, celelalte) show the same fusion pattern with agreement endings.
