Bărbat comes from Latin barbatus, meaning bearded, formed from barba (beard) plus the adjectival suffix -atus, having or provided with. Over time in popular Latin and early Romanian, the word shifted from describing a bearded man to simply meaning an adult male. The same root barbă still survives in Romanian as the separate word for beard.
