Etymology

Totuși is not a single word inherited whole from Latin. It was built inside Romanian from tot, which goes back to Latin totus meaning whole or all, and și, an old adverb meaning also or even. Fusing the two shifted the sense from all and toward the contrastive still, after all, nevertheless. A linking vowel u joins the parts, the same pattern seen in totuna, all the same.
