Etymology

Romanian "specific" came into the language through French "spécifique", which traces back to Late Latin "specificus". That Latin word was built from "species" (kind, appearance) and a form of "facere" (to make), so it originally meant something like "making up a distinct kind". Romanian kept both the adjective and, less commonly, a noun use ("specificul") for the defining character of something.
