Etymology
Deja entered Romanian directly from the French adverb déjà, meaning already. It came in with the wave of French loanwords that reshaped Romanian vocabulary during the 19th-century push toward Western European culture and language. French déjà itself was built in Old French from ja, from Latin iam, meaning now or already, strengthened by the prefix dès, from Latin de ex, meaning from or since. Romanian kept the French spelling and sound almost untouched, unlike many older native time adverbs.
