Etymology

"Dat" comes from Latin "datus," the past participle of "dare" (to give). Romanian inherited the verb "a da" directly from spoken Latin, and "dat" kept its original grammatical role: it forms compound past tenses ("am dat" means "I gave") and works as an adjective meaning "given." The Latin root goes back to Proto-Indo-European *deh₃-, "to give," one of the most widely shared roots in the Indo-European family.
